- Abert's squirrels shed their fluffy ear tufts in the summer months, but are still easily recognizable for having long, upright ears.
- Ponderosa pines provide the Abert's staple diet; seeds, twigs, buds, sap, fungus and inner bark are eaten throughout the year.
- Unlike other squirrels, Abert's do not store food. Being diurnal, they forage from just before sunrise until just before sunset.
- Abert's evade predators by scampering through the interlocking tree canopies, vanishing amid their many densely-spaced nests.
